Feb. 22 #OFChat: Has Twitter changed the way we follow local politics?

UPDATE
In case you missed our chat, it's embedded below. Our original post begins after the embed.

It used to be we got the latest news on local politics from the 6 p.m. broadcasts, or in the next morning's newspaper.

But with reporters like Jonathan Goldsbie, whose fingers never rest, and even regular citizens like Toronto's Matt Elliot, who report municipal political news in 140 characters or less, now municipal coverage is as close as our pocket.

Yes, Twitter has changed the way information is delivered. No more so than perhaps at Toronto City Hall, where the press gallery itself is changing. Much of the information in the tweets won't make it on to the 6 p.m. newscast or in tomorrow's paper, but it lives on Twitter.

Inspired by Adam McDowell's piece on OpenFile Toronto last week, we want to know: Has Twitter changed the way we follow politics? We'll chat about it at the next OFChat on Wednesday, February 22 at 2 p.m. ET.

Here are the questions for the chat:

1. Do you get your local political news via Twitter?
2. Have you seen a change in the way municipal politics is covered since Twitter became popular?
3. Do you think Twitter has opened up a way to cover politics in a way that didn't exist before?
4. Do you think Twitter's 140-character limit can be a problem when dealing with big political issues?
5. Does Twitter open politics up to the masses more, or make it more closed-off because not everyone is on Twitter?

You can also submit your own question for consideration by tweeting @OpenFile before the chat or tweeting @sarah_millar during the chat.

The hashtag for the chat will be #OFChat — make sure all your responses are marked with this hashtag so others following the chat see your responses. You can jump into the conversation yourself, or retweet others' views you agree with (or disagree with).

We recommend using TweetChat or http://www.tweetdeck.com/">Tweetdeck for the chat — it will make participating in the chat easier. If you want an idea of what to expect, check out a transcript of last week's chat.

We hope to see you Wednesday!
