Before joining OpenFile, Kathy was team editor in charge of training and development at the Toronto Star, Canada's largest newspaper. One of her first newsroom jobs was in the late 1970s at the Toronto Sun, transcribing harness-racing results from fuzzy and primitive fax transmissions into a video display terminal. (Calling it a computer would be too kind.) After joining the Star in 1988, she worked in both management and guild roles, including deputy city editor, news editor, assistant national editor and restaurant critic. She has extensive experience as a trainer and spent 2008 shepherding scores of print journalists through a week-long, in-house multimedia boot camp. She has also worked for the Ottawa Citizen and written for Canadian Gardening magazine.
